Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

We are delighted to offer an OCT scan to all our patients.

This is an advanced eye scan which captures both a photograph and a cross-sectional scan of the eye which can give early detection of various eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Age- related macular degeneration, Vitreous detachments and Macular holes.

For more information on the OCT see our information leaflet

LENSES

Anti reflective Coatings

Light is everywhere. We live in an environment with light of different types, both indoors and outdoors. Daily life is filled with technologies – iPhones, iPads etc. along with VDU use, working under fluorescent lighting and driving at night all of which can cause eye strain. An anti reflective coating significantly reduces down the glare and is strongly recommended.

Some anti reflective lenses now come with anti smudge, anti scratch, water and dust repellent properties as well as the very important Utra Violet protection.

Photochromatic Lenses

These are lenses which change colour in the light. They are clear when indoors and darken when you go outside. The main advantage of these lenses is that you have clear everyday glasses as well as sun glasses all rolled into one pair, so there’s no need to carry a second pair.

Hi Index lenses

If you have a high prescription then hi index lenses are something that needs to be considered when buying new glasses. They are thinner, flatter and lighter than the standard plastic lenses which in turn has the benefit of making your glasses more comfortable to wear .

Progressive Lenses (Varifocals)

Varifocal lenses have distance, intermediate and reading prescriptions all combined into one lens. The distance prescription is on top with the magnification increasing gradually through the lens. These are ideal for those who find swopping glasses or putting on/taking off glasses, an inconvenience. All you need is one pair for all your visual needs.

EYE EXAMINATION

Why is it so important to have an eye examination?

We use our eyes from first thing in the morning when we open them, up until we close them at night. They work extremely hard allowing us to see, be it in work, school, driving etc. They deserve to be looked after and we can do that by having them checked every two years.

What happens in the eye test?

The optometrist will take you into the testing room where she will take a brief medical history from you. She will then check your vision and advise you if glasses are needed.

She will then check in behind the eyes for any abnormalities and eye diseases which may be present.

How long will the eye test take?

It will take about 20 minutes.

Am I entitled to a FREE eye test?

If you have a medical card or have enough PRSI contributions you are entitled to a test completely FREE as well as FREE glasses.

How do I know if I have enough PRSI contributions to avail of a free eye examination?

Call into us here in Bennett Optical and we will happily check with the social welfare online services. Give us your PPS number and your date of birth and we’ll do the rest.

What do I do if I have a medical card?

All you have to do is call into us with your medical card and we will fill in the application form for you. We will also post it to the HSE for you, so all you have to do is wait for the reply to be returned to your home address. Then contact us to make an appointment

EYE DISEASES

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of part of your eye called the lens. Your vision becomes blurred or dim because light cannot pass through the clouded lens to the back of the eye

The lens is a transparent body behind the iris, the coloured part of the eye. The lens bends light rays so that they give a clear image to the back of the eye – the retina.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye condition that causes damage to the optic nerve, which transmits images to the brain. The eye needs a certain amount of pressure to maintain shape and size. However, increased fluid can put pressure on the optic nerve and cause damage.

If glaucoma is not treated, damage can progress, causing a loss of peripheral (or ‘side’) vision and may eventually lead to complete sight loss.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a serious eye disease, which is usually associated with long-term diabetes and, if left untreated, can lead to blindness. There are three distinct forms of the disease:

  • Background retinopathy
  • Maculopathy
  • Proliferate retinopathy.

The very best way to treat retinopathy is to prevent it, and with good long-term management of diabetes, it should be possible to reduce the number of cases of retinopathy in this country.

CONTACT LENSES

For all of us, clear vision is a must, but what happens when glasses get in the way ?

Contact lenses are an alternative to wearing glasses. They give you the freedom to do whatever activities you wish without compromising your vision.

There are several different types of lenses to avail from to suit your individual needs, such as Daily Disposable and Monthly Disposable as well as many more.

Ring us to make an appointment for a contact lens fitting where we will happily discuss the lens options available.

CONTACT LENS FITTING

This is an examination to determine the suitability of your eyes for contact lenses.

  • The optometrist will firstly perform a full eye examination, along with checking the front surface of the eye.
  • The different lens options will be discussed with you and depending on how often you want to wear the lenses ie full time, sport, social etc a recommendation will be made.
  • You will then be shown exactly how to insert and remove the contact lenses.
  • Trial lenses will be given to you to take home.
  • An aftercare appointment will be made for you to return wearing the lenses where the fit and comfort is assessed. An order can then be placed.
